A graduate of the 1984 law school alumnus of the National University of Singapore, Muthu Arusu was called to the Singapore Bar in 1985 after completing his period of training at another law firm in Singapore. He then joined the Litigation department of that firm where he was made a Partner in 1991, and practised primarily in the areas of shipping, insurance, international trade and banking law in addition to maintaining an interest in defamation matters, administrative law issues and economic torts for more than 13 years.
Muthu moved over to Allen & Gledhill in 1998 as a Partner in Litigation & Dispute Resolution. His areas of practice have since expanded to dealing with commercial fraud matters, and commercial crime litigation. Fluent in English, Malay and his native Indian dialect, Muthu has also been involved in managing cross-border litigation disputes for institutional clients in diverse jurisdictions such as India, Indonesia, Myanmar and the Philippines.
He also has an arbitration practice in shipping and insurance disputes, and has further advised Indonesian entities in managing GAFTA/FOSFA trade arbitrations. He is a Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators and a Member of The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and sits as an arbitrator under the auspices of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre and the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration.
By way of professional contribution, Muthu has been a member of the Inquiry Committee of the Law Society since 1997, and also tutors in Admiralty Law and Practice at the Post-Graduate Practical Law Course. He has also featured on the Law Society's Panel of Mediators.
