Corina Song is a Partner and a member of the Maritime & Aviation, Insurance and International Trade practice groups. Corina's practice areas include all areas of litigious shipping and admiralty matters, with an emphasis on bunker claims, supply claims, ship repair claims, charterparty disputes, bill of lading disputes and mortgage enforcement. Corina's insurance practice includes both contentious and non-contentious aspects of insurance.

Some of the notable matters which Corina has worked on include:

 

“NAGASAKI SPIRIT” - where she acted for the salvor who, together with others, challenged the shipyard’s claim for their expenses in excess of S$1 million to be ranked as Sheriff’s expenses, ahead of all other claimants;

“DWIMA 1” - a local case which deals with the enforcement of a possessory lien by a ship repairer by way of an in rem action;

Splosna Plovba International v. AOL - where she acted for the plaintiff/ ship owners in resisting the defendant’s/charterer’s application for a stay pursuant to Section 6 of the IAA, where the court stayed the action on condition that security be provided to our client;

“BERKUT” - which determined that the value of a ship, for the purposes of security, to be the open market value of the vessel and not the forced sale value;

“SEA NIMROD” - which concerned the quantification of security to be furnished in relation to a charterers’ claim for damages for non-delivery under a Barecon 89 bareboat charterparty with an option to purchase. The court reduced the amount of security from US$3.3m to about US$380,000 plus interest and costs;

“UNION STAR 88” - where she acted for cargo insurers in respect of a claim involving the grounding of a vessel in Vietnam, which led to a total loss of the cargoes on board;

acting for local insurers in various policy disputes as well as defending claims brought against their insureds; and

acting in numerous related actions for the minority shareholders/directors of a local holding company which is involved in the shipping and timber business.

Corina obtained an LLB (Hons) degree from the University of Hull in 1988 and an LLM from the University of London in 1992. She completed the Law Society Finals at the College of Law, Guildford before being admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales in 1992. She worked with a firm of solicitors in London as an articled clerk from 1989 and thereafter as a solicitor until 1992 when she returned to Singapore. She was called to the Singapore Bar in 1993. She joined Allen & Gledhill in 1997 and became a partner in 2000.
