Edwin Tong is a Partner in Litigation & Dispute Resolution. He regularly acts in major corporate, commercial and insolvency disputes for private and public listed companies, major international as well as local banking and financial institutions.

Edwin is recommended for his expertise in dispute resolution in The Asia Pacific Legal 500 (2007/2008) which notes that he is an "active figure, receiving plaudits for his work representing the National Kidney Foundation in high-profile claims against its ex-CEO and directors for breach of fiduciary duties". He is also noted as a leading lawyer in Who's Who Legal Singapore (2008) which notes that he is an "articulate practitioner", whose "client list includes a number of major names. He acted for the committee of inquiry set up by the National Healthcare Group looking into clinical and ethical breaches occurring during a research trial carried out by the National Neuroscience Institute".

He has been involved in a number of significant cases which have come before the Singapore Courts in recent years. His other recent cases in Court include acting for Seagate Technologies LLC in a US$500 million action that is presently pending in the Singapore High Court and acting for Bio-Treat Technology Ltd, a company which is listed on the SGX-ST in relation to a S$400 million claim brought by its ex-Chairman and Director.

Edwin also has an active arbitration practice and his recent cases include:

 

acted in an ICC arbitration which was conducted in London involving dispute between a Japanese multi-national corporation and a substantial Singapore company over the construction of diesel power generators in Pakistan;

acting for a Fortune 500 US entity against a listed Singapore corporation in relation to a dispute over a utilities plant. The arbitration was conducted under SIAC rules;

acted in an UNCITRAL arbitration which was conducted in London between a large Singapore gas corporation and an international energy supplier; and

acted for an Indonesian conglomerate against a Belgian multinational company in a Singapore arbitration where the claim was in excess of US$150 million.

 

In addition, he is involved in a varied range of professional liability matters particularly in acting for medical practitioners in malpractice actions and disciplinary inquiries. In 2006, Edwin was also awarded the Singapore Medical Association Merit Award in recognition of contributions and services rendered to the Singapore Medical Association. Edwin is Honorary Legal Advisor to the Singapore Medical Association and to the Singapore College of Family Physicians.

Edwin also spent a year at Clifford Chance London and has also chambered at Essex Court Chambers where he worked with several leading English Queen’s Counsel. Edwin was called to the Singapore Bar in 1995.
