Eugene Thuraisingam is a Partner in Litigation & Dispute Resolution. His areas of practice include white-collar criminal law, where he has advised and acted in areas involving the Securities and Futures Act, the Companies Act, the Prevention of Corruption Act and Penal Code offences. He also advises and acts in a wide range of commercial litigation, such as insolvency litigation, shareholders disputes and breach of director’s duties, employment disputes, defamation, partnership disputes, insurance litigation and banking disputes.

Some of the cases which Eugene has acted in and advised include:

the successful defence of the Chairman of a Singapore listed company who was charged under Section 76(1)(a)(i)(A) of the Companies Act for authorising the company to indirectly give financial assistance to a third party to purchase shares in the company;

the successful defence of a lawyer charged with Penal Code offences;

the successful defence of a former nominated member of parliament charged with Prevention of Corruption Act offences;

negotiating a plea of guilt and mitigating on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer of a Singapore listed company which provided after market services for consumer mobile communication and digital electronic devices, who faced 98 charges under the Securities and Futures Act and the Penal Code;

negotiating a plea of guilt and mitigating on behalf of the Chairman of a Singapore listed company which provided education services, who faced 4 charges under the Securities and Futures Act;

negotiating a plea of guilt and mitigating on behalf of a director of a company charged with the Securities and Futures Act offence of price rigging of a share counter;

successfully acting for the liquidator of the Singapore subsidiary of a multinational company in the High Court and the Court of Appeal in a claim against the former managing director of the company, for breaching his fiduciary duties;

successfully acting for a Belgian bank in defending a suit brought by the liquidator of a Singapore company challenging the Singapore company's payment of USD 20.92 million to the bank as a transaction at an undervalue under Section 98 of the Bankruptcy Act;

successfully acting for the Judicial Managers of a Singapore company in striking out a claim brought by a former employee of the Singapore company, which involved the issues of whether the former employee was entitled to payment of compensation for unconsumed leave and when a Judicial Manager is deemed to have adopted a contract of employment under Section 227 I of the Companies Act; and

successfully obtaining an order in the Court of Appeal for the lifting of a mandatory injunction ordered by the High Court in a defamation case brought by a Singapore company against one of its shareholders.

 

Eugene graduated on the dean's list in 2000 from the National University of Singapore with an LLB (Hons) degree and was called to the Singapore Bar in 2001 after completing his pupillage at Allen & Gledhill. Thereafter, he joined the Firm as an Associate.
