Sunit Chhabra is Co-Head of the Firm’s Tax Practice Group. He specialises in tax and revenue law and has advised extensively on income tax, stamp duty and goods and services tax (GST) matters, including tax implications in relation to mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructurings, structuring of offshore investments in a tax-efficient manner and seeking advance rulings and/or clearances from the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) in relation to proposed schemes or transactions to be undertaken.

Sunit also assists corporate and individual clients in replying to queries raised by IRAS, seeking resolution and settlement of disputes between them and IRAS and in representing clients in tax hearings before the Board of Review and the appellate courts.

Some of the recent publicly-announced transactions which Sunit has advised on include:

 

obtaining income tax exemption in respect of interest payments under S$600 million 6 per cent. Innovative Tier 1 Capital Securities issued by Malayan Banking Berhad, pursuant to the QDS Plus Scheme, the first QDS Plus approved bond issuance in Singapore;

obtaining income tax exemption in respect of payments made under S$200 million Sovereign-rated Islamic Bonds (or Sukuk) issued by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, the first central bank of a non-Muslim majority jurisdiction to come up with an ongoing local currency sukuk issuance Programme, under Qualifying Debt Securities Plus (QDS Plus) Scheme, the first QDS Plus approved sukuk issuance in Singapore;

advising STATS ChipPAC Ltd on its offer to purchase US$150 million of 7.5 per cent. Senior Notes due 2010 and US$215 million of 6.75 per cent. Senior Notes due 2011 issued by STATS ChipPAC Ltd; and

advising the lead manager on the issuance of notes, comprising junior and senior mezzanine notes, issued by Mira International Holdings Pte Ltd, as part of a US$638 million leverage buyout of the drilling company PT Apexindo Pratama Duta Tbk from PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk and Encore International Ltd.

 

Sunit is a Certified Public Accountant and member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). He is also a member of the Income Tax Board of Review and a member of the Ministry of Finance's Tax Advisory Committee.

Sunit graduated from the University of London with an LLB (Hons) degree in 1995 and has been called to the English Bar and Singapore Bar. He obtained an LLM degree from the University of London in 1999.
