Vivian Ang graduated in 1980 from the National University of Singapore with an LLB (Hons) degree, having attained the highest marks in her class. She also holds a Masters in Maritime Law (Cardiff). Vivian was called to the Singapore Bar in 1981. She joined Allen & Gledhill as a Partner in 1989. She presently co-heads the Maritime and Aviation Practice Group and International Trade Practice Group. Her practice encompasses litigious and non-litigious shipping and aviation matters, insurance, product liability, international trade and transportation, banking, domestic and international arbitration and mediation.
She has been involved in a variety of notable and high profile matters.
She handles litigation and arbitration matters including claims concerning the international sale of goods, charterparty disputes, ship repair and construction disputes, sale and purchase of vessels, mortgage enforcement of ship and aircraft, carriage of goods and passengers by sea and air, freight forwarding disputes, repair and maintenance of aircraft, damage to ship and aircraft and the arrest, detention and re-possession of ship and aircraft.
She is consistently listed as a leading shipping and admiralty practitioner in a number of publications including Chambers Global, Chambers Asia, Asialaw Leading Lawyers, The Asia Pacific Legal 500 and Who’s Who Legal Singapore. She has been ranked in the top tier of leading individuals in Shipping by Chambers Asia (2009), which also described her as “impressive, thorough, sensible and someone who makes brilliant strategic decisions”. The Asia Pacific Legal 500 (2009/2010) also notes that Vivian is “extremely bright and conscientious”. She has been described as “first class” and “one of the top local practitioners” in The International Who’s Who of Shipping & Maritime Lawyers (2008) and has been listed as one of the most highly regarded individuals two years running in The International Who’s Who of Shipping & Maritime Lawyers (2008 and 2009).
Vivian has spoken and chaired at numerous conferences held locally and overseas including the annual IBA conferences in Prague (2005), in Singapore (2007) and in Madrid (2009), and the IBA Maritime Committee conferences in Dubai (2006) and in Athens (2008).
She has also contributed articles to various local and international publications and is a co-contributor to the Singapore Court Practice (2003, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009), Singapore Court Precedents and Pleadings (2006), Halsbury’s Laws of Singapore on Shipping, Vol 17(2) 2006 Edn, and the Singapore section of the Encyclopedia of International Commercial Litigation (Kluwer Law International, 2009).
Vivian is the Vice-Chair of the International Bar Association (IBA) Maritime and Transport Law Committee and a member of the Law Society of Singapore, the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, the Maritime Law Association of Singapore, the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand, and the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA).
