Kenny Yap is a Partner in the Maritime & Aviation practice and a member of the International Trade team. His main area of practice is international trade and shipping covering both contentious as well as non-contentious work.

On the contentious side, Kenny has acted on a wide variety of disputes, including customs and letters of credit disputes, commodities disputes, cargo claims, bunker and repair claims, mortgage enforcement, charterparty disputes, ship sale and purchase disputes, maritime fraud claims, death and personal injury claims, shipping casualty matters, insurance and insolvency. Some of the notable contentious matters in which Kenny has been involved include:

acting for a ship management company on a highly complex Singapore High Court action involving more than 200 vessels chartered and managed over a period of three years;

acting for ship owners in several complex and high-value disputes, including claims arising from unauthorised shipping and chartering transactions, loss of cargo and recovery of proceeds;

acting on a number of SIAC and SCMA arbitrations arising from the cancellation of contracts for the sale and purchase of ships;

acting for engine suppliers on a variety of disputes involving the supply and installation of marine engines including defending claims brought against the engine supplier as a result of alleged defects in the engines; and

acting for a number of shipyards, both local and foreign, in pursuing as well as defending actions and arbitrations relating to the repair of ships.

On the non-contentious side, Kenny’s experience encompasses advising on sale of goods contracts, contracts of affreightment, bills of lading, chartering contracts, leasing contracts, logistics contracts, shipbuilding contracts, repair and conversion contracts, contracts for the supply and installation of marine equipment, warehousing contracts, freight forwarding contracts, agency contracts and various other shipping contracts. He also advises on UN sanctions, trade and customs issues, export control matters and in particular, issues relating to the transfer of strategic goods and technologies.

Kenny is a member of the Singapore Shipping Association’s Legal and Insurance Committee. He is also a fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators and a member of the Maritime Law Association of Singapore.

Kenny graduated from the University of Cambridge with a BA (Hons) degree in Law and an LLM. He qualified as a Barrister-at-Law at Middle Temple. He was called to the Singapore Bar in 1993, when he joined Allen & Gledhill. He became a Partner in 2000.
