Rundown on the rapidly changing legal landscape in Indonesia during the Covid-19 pandemic

On 13 April 2020, Indonesian President Joko Widodo declared Covid-19 a “national disaster” through Presidential Decree No. 12 of 2020. The declaration of a national disaster gives the central government increased power to determine appropriate policies to respond to the Covid-19 outbreak, identifying the particular policies that must be borne in mind by governors, regents and mayors when determining a particular course of action to address the Covid-19 outbreak.
Since the first recognised outbreak of Covid-19 transmission in Indonesia at the beginning of March 2020, the number of confirmed cases has been rising rapidly. Like other countries struggling to deal with the situation, the Indonesian Government has issued several directives designed to limit the spread of Covid-19 and address the economic impact due to the business slow down.
