Currently before the Myanmar Parliament is a draft law to establish a trade development body. It has been reported that the draft law seeks to promote fair competition, support locally-produced products and the acquisition of technology and innovation to promote Myanmar’s participation in the global business sector.

The draft law proposes that the trade development body, together with the Ministry of Commerce, will be empowered to issue lists of restricted items and non-tariff regulations. The draft law was supported by the World Bank and Germany’s development agency GIZ and is expected to be passed this year.
