International Counsel

Chahat’s areas of practice are international arbitration and cross-border dispute resolution, with focus on India. He regularly acts as counsel in international arbitrations administered by major institutions such as the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), the International Court of Arbitration (ICC), and the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre.

Prior to joining the firm, Chahat was a counsel at SIAC where he administered over 100 international arbitrations across a range of sectors.

Chahat has a Master’s degree in International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution from the National University of Singapore.

Work Highlights

  • Acting as a sole arbitrator in an SIAC arbitration seated in Singapore, between entities from Singapore, Australia, and Malaysia in relation to loan agreements governed by Singapore law.
  • Representing an Indian engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor in two Singapore-seated, English law governed, ICC arbitrations against a Rwanda-based entity. The dispute arises from agreements relating to the EPC of a power plant in Africa.
  • Representing a leading Spanish energy company in a Singapore-seated, SIAC arbitration, governed by Singapore law, against Singapore entities. The dispute involves issues related to the construction quality of a solar power plant in South-East Asia.
  • Representing a leading Swedish group in a Singapore-seated, Singapore law governed, SIAC arbitration against a Chinese entity. The dispute concerns the sale and purchase of defective gas cookers for use in recreational vehicles.
  • Representing a Singapore company in a Singapore-seated, Singapore law governed, SIAC arbitration against a Singapore-Japan joint venture entity. The dispute involves the construction of a hospital building in Singapore.
  • Represented a major Japanese trading house in a Singapore-seated, Singapore law governed, SIAC arbitration against a Korean entity. The dispute relates to the sale and purchase of batteries for use in electric vehicles.
  • Represented a leading Indian pharmaceutical company in a Singapore-seated, Singapore law governed, ICC arbitration against Australian entities concerning a breach of confidence claim.
  • Represented a leading Indian private equity firm in a Singapore-seated, SIAC arbitration against a Singaporean institutional investor. The disputes arise from two advisory agreements concerning an investment fund governed by Indian law.
