Richard has extensive experience in domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions (with particular focus on share and business acquisitions), local and regional joint ventures, schemes of arrangements, amalgamations, capital reductions, corporate reorganisations as well as general corporate and commercial law.

He has been cited for his expertise in mergers and acquisitions and recognised as a leading individual for Corporate/M&A in legal publications such as Chambers Global and Chambers Asia-Pacific. Chambers Global has noted that Richard is “held by peers to be ‘one of the next generation, the up-and-coming ones’ in the M&A sphere”, while in Chambers Asia-Pacific, he has been described as “very savvy, very quick on his feet and a good negotiator.” In The Legal 500 Asia Pacific, Richard has also been noted by clients to be “very commercial”, “very bright” and “has the confidence of private equity investors”. He is also noted for his work in M&A by IFLR1000.

Richard graduated from the National University of Singapore with an LL.B. (Hons) degree. He joined Allen & Gledhill on a scholarship in 1995 and became a Partner in 2000. During his time at Allen & Gledhill, he undertook a secondment as Regional Legal Counsel for the CNBC Asia and National Geographic cable channels in Singapore, and later with General Electric International Inc, in Hong Kong. He also had a one-year stint in the London office of Linklaters, where he gained considerable experience on cross-border transactions.

Work Highlights

  • Acted for Singapore Press Holdings Limited in its S$350 million spin-off of its media business to SPH Media Trust as well as its subsequent S$4 billion take-over and privatisation by Cuscaden Peak Pte. Ltd.
  • Acted for Temasek in the merger of Temasek units, Surbana International Consultants and Singbridge Group with JTC subsidiaries, Ascendas and Jurong International to create a single platform worth S$5 billion which is one of Asia’s largest integrated urban solutions providers.
  • Acted for GIC Real Estate in the acquisition of ProLogis’ property fund interests in Japan and China for US$1.3 billion, with this eventually paving the way for the subsequent establishment and listing of Global Logistics Properties.
  • Acted for Alpha Investment Partners in the creation of a joint office investment platform with City Developments through Profit Participation Securities in a deal worth S$1.5 billion.
