On 27 September 2023, the Ministry of Transport (“MOT”) announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (“MOU”) on Cooperation in the Future of Mobility with the Ministry of Transport of the People’s Republic of China.

This MOU was signed on 27 September 2023 by Chee Hong Tat, Acting Minister for Transport and Li Xiaopeng, China’s Minister of Transport, during the Global Sustainable Transport Forum in Beijing (“Forum”). The Ministers discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation between Singapore and China, including the safe deployment of automated driving vehicles, electrification of vehicles for public and private transport, sustainable fuels for maritime and aviation industries, as well as enhancing connectivity between Singapore and China.

The Maritime Port Authority also signed other MOUs at the Forum with a variety of actors, including the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission, the Tianjin Port and Shipping Authority, and China Classification Society. These seek to deepen collaborations on digitalisation, decarbonisation, talent development and information exchange.

More recently, on 10 October 2023, Singapore and Jiangsu continued to show keen interest in partnering each other to further commercial interests, with 16 projects signed at the 17th Singapore-Jiangsu Cooperation Council (“SJCC”) meeting. During the meeting, the leaders noted the potential to deepen collaboration in the areas of the green economy and innovation, with Singapore and China pledging to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and 2060 respectively.
