Jonathan is a Partner in the Litigation & Dispute Resolution Department.

Jonathan’s areas of practice cover commercial litigation and arbitration. His experience includes corporate disputes across the technology, hospitality and commodities sectors, and shareholders’ disputes relating to share subscriptions, joint venture and investment agreements.

Prior to joining Allen & Gledhill, Jonathan served as a Justices’ Law Clerk to the Chief Justice and Judges of the Supreme Court of Singapore.

In 2023, he was appointed as a Young Independent Counsel by the Supreme Court of Singapore. He appeared before the High Court in Syed Fathuddin Putra bin Syed A Rahman v Public Prosecutor [2023] SGHC 338 where he assisted the Court in developing a sentencing framework for offences under the Customs Act.

Jonathan graduated from the National University of Singapore with a LL.B. (Hons) degree (First Class) in 2017, and was awarded several academic prizes including the Adrian Clark Memorial Medal and the Thomson Reuters Prize in International Commercial Litigation.

Work Highlights

  • Successfully acted for a leading FinTech and payment services provider in obtaining summary judgment on a multi-million contract claim.
  • Successfully defended a former chief executive officer in a S$1.6 billion conspiracy and minority oppression claim in respect of a technology company.
  • Successfully acted for a leading digital bank in a multi-million claim in the Singapore High Court against borrowers and their directors in respect of fraud and forgery of financing documents.
  • Represented a Singapore-based private equity firm and its principals in two High Court suits initiated by a Hong Kong-listed company, involving claims of fraud and misrepresentation relating to loan agreements, share purchase arrangements, and security instruments exceeding S$200 million, securing a favourable resolution.
  • Acted for a leading construction company against a foreign state government in an international arbitration concerning the construction of an airport, with the amount in dispute totalling approximately US$52 million.
  • Successfully acted for a leading commodity trader in a SIAC arbitration against a Vietnamese conglomerate in respect of coal purchased for supply to state owned Vietnam power plants.
  • Successfully defended a leading insurer against a claim for wrongful repudiation of coverage, involving novel legal issues relating to conditions precedent for coverage and an insured’s right to compromise claims.
  • Acted for a leading Burmese conglomerate in achieving a favourable restructuring of joint venture and debt obligations, involving cross-border insolvency and regulatory elements across Singapore and Myanmar.
  • Acted for an SGX Mainboard-listed corporation in two High Court actions against a U.S. private equity firm over alleged breaches of a share purchase agreement tied to a S$100+ million divestment of its China-based plastics business, culminating in a favourable settlement.
