The Right Fit

The best way of finding out whether we are the right firm for you is to spend time with us. Many of our interns return as Practice Trainees and qualify as lawyers with us.

What To Expect

An internship with us will provide you with a better understanding of our many specialised practice areas and will help you to decide which area of practice you are interested in. During your internship, you will be mentored by a Partner and will shadow an Associate who will help you get the most out of your internship.

Our internship programmes are designed to allow you to experience life as a lawyer and to gain an insight into our Firm's culture. You will have the opportunity to attend court hearings and client meetings, as well as to work on actual matters and undertake tasks such as preparing research memorandums and drafting legal documentation. You will also be invited to participate in training programmes organised for our lawyers so that you have an idea of the training you can expect to receive as a Practice Trainee and an Associate. Needless to say, our interns are also invited to join all social events, including our traditional welcome drinks for interns.

Internship PeriodS

We run four structured internship programmes, during which time you can join us for a period of three weeks. For 2024, the internship programme periods are:

  1. 13 May to 31 May
  2. 10 June to 28 June
  3. 8 July to 26 July
  4. 5 August to 23 August

Whilst we do accept applications for internships outside of these periods on an ad hoc basis, we would encourage students to join us for the internship programmes as there will be planned activities and lectures for students.

Interns will be entitled to receive an honorarium during their period of internship with us.

FAQ

For 2021, we are running four structured internships programmes from May to August and accept on average 50 interns per intake. We try to accommodate as many internship applications as we can but we do have to contend with space constraints.

We don't have fixed criteria when assessing internship applications and will consider each application holistically. While a strong academic performance would stand an applicant in good stead, we also consider other aspects such as an applicant's interests, extra-curricular activities and leadership roles.

You will have to state, in order of preference, your chosen departments. For administrative reasons, our Firm is divided into six departments:

  • Corporate & Commercial

Our Corporate & Commercial Department encompasses one of the most highly-regarded general corporate and commercial practices which covers competition & foreign investment review, corporate regulatory & compliance, energy infrastructure & projects, and technology & corporate intellectual property. We regularly handle a diverse and comprehensive range of corporate matters, across all major industries and sectors. Our work encompasses the entire spectrum of corporate and commercial transactions including company law advice ranging from director and shareholder issues to corporate re-organisations and restructurings to licensing requirements and regulatory approvals, and from labour and industrial relations to safety, health and environmental imperatives. Our experience in advising on, and negotiating and drafting commercial agreements, is unparalleled.

  • Corporate Mergers & Acquisitions

Our Corporate Mergers & Acquisitions Department advises on a broad range of transactions including local and regional joint ventures, share and business acquisitions and disposals, corporate re-organisations, privatisations and mergers, leverage buyouts, schemes of reconstruction and amalgamation, capital restructurings and private equity investments.

  • Corporate Real Estate

Our Corporate Real Estate Department advises on a full range of domestic and cross-border real estate and real estate related transactions including acquisitions and divestments, real estate financing structures, property funds, joint venture and joint development arrangements, high-profile anchor tenant and build-to-suit leasing transactions, property development, securitisations and real estate investment trusts.

  • Financial Services

Our Financial Services Department covers banking and finance including project finance; debt and equity capital markets; funds; real estate investment trusts and business trusts; financial regulatory; ship and aircraft financing; securitisations, derivatives and structured finance; as well as tax and private wealth. We develop and provide innovative financial solutions for our clients, which include domestic and international financial institutions and many of the most well-known companies in Singapore and in the region.

  • Intellectual Property & Technology

Our Intellectual Property & Technology Department advises on a broad range of intellectual property matters in fields as diverse as biotechnology, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, electronics, computer, software, media and entertainment. Our practice encompasses civil and criminal enforcement, management and transactional matters, ranging from advising, prosecuting and defending our clients' intellectual property rights, managing and co-ordinating our client's intellectual property profiles local and worldwide to drafting, negotiating and advising on technology and communications-related transactions. The team is also well versed in Cybersecurity and Data Protection law and practice.

  • Litigation & Dispute Resolution

Our Litigation & Dispute Resolution Department resolves contentious matters on behalf of our clients.  These disputes run the gamut from high profile shareholder activism to new age crypto-currency disputes.  We are involved in all aspects of each engagement – from the initial investigation to the advisory work to the final resolution whether at the negotiation table or in the Court room or arbitration chambers.  We embrace complex contentious work with an international dimension and believe in exposing our young lawyers to the cut and thrust of modern dispute practice.

We will consider any such requests, subject to administrative constraints. We would not recommend an internship shorter than two weeks as it may not allow you enough time to truly gain an insight into our Firm.

We do accept applications for internships outside of the scheduled periods on an ad hoc basis. However, we would encourage students to join us for the structured internship programmes as there will be planned activities and lectures for students.

Of course. An internship is the best time for you to find out which area of practice interests you.

We suggest that you start doing internships during or after you have completed your second year of law school as you will derive more value from your internship after you have some basic legal training.

Yes, you will have the opportunity to do actual legal work. The type of work which you get will however depend on factors such as the specific matters which are active during your internship.
