On 20 September 2022, the Indonesia House of Representatives passed into law the Personal Data Protection Law. It is not yet in effect.

The Law, when in force, will supersede Government Regulation No. 71 of 2019 and Minister of Communications and Informatics Regulation No. 20 of 2016. It sets out the basis for the collection and processing of personal data, defines personal data, specifies the types of personal data, sets out the procedure for notifications in the event of a breach, considers offshore data transfer, and overhauls the previous penalty regime.
