On 7 May 2025, the Energy Market Authority (“EMA”) issued a press release announcing that a new entity, Singapore GasCo Pte. Ltd. (“Singapore GasCo”), has been established to centralise the procurement and supply of natural gas to the power sector in Singapore.

EMA explained that natural gas currently accounts for around 95% of Singapore’s electricity generation. As Singapore pushes ahead with energy transition towards net-zero by 2050, natural gas will continue to play a crucial role in safeguarding energy security and supporting an orderly transition. Singapore GasCo, a fully Government-owned entity, is set up to centralise the procurement and supply of gas to power generation companies to reap economies of scale and negotiate for more favourable gas contracting terms, procure natural gas from diverse sources, and enter into longer term gas contracts to provide more stable supply and prices.

The establishment of Singapore GasCo is a major milestone in Singapore’s energy transition journey, with the entity playing a key role to support a secure, resilient, and cost-competitive power system.
