EMA to conduct study on safety and technical feasibility of advanced nuclear energy technologies
29 September 2025
On 2 September 2025, the Energy Market Authority (“EMA”) announced that a study to assess advanced nuclear energy technologies, borne out of its tender exercise in December 2024 for consultancy services in this regard, is ready to proceed. The study will examine the safety performance and technical feasibility of technologies such as small modular reactors, taking into account their safety features, level of technological maturity, and commercial readiness.
Mott MacDonald Singapore Pte Limited has been appointed to carry out the study. With more than 60 years of experience in the nuclear energy sector,
Mott MacDonald provides technical, regulatory, and policy advice to technology developers and government agencies on advanced nuclear technologies and nuclear safety analysis.
Singapore has not as yet decided to adopt nuclear energy; however, EMA notes that it is important to continue developing local expertise and collaborating with specialists to deepen understanding of nuclear energy, particularly advanced nuclear technologies. Any future decision on deployment will require careful evaluation of safety, reliability, affordability, and environmental sustainability in Singapore’s context.
