EFTA-Singapore Digital Economy Agreement enters into force for Singapore and Norway
27 March 2026
On 1 March 2026, the Ministry of Trade and Industry (“MTI”) announced that the European Free Trade Association (“EFTA”)-Singapore Digital Economy Agreement (“ESDEA”) entered into force for Singapore and Norway on the same day.
The ESDEA was signed on 25 September 2025 in Switzerland. Its entry into force deepens connectivity in the digital economy between Singapore and the EFTA States. It establishes clear and robust rules to facilitate the trusted and seamless flow of data across borders, including in the financial services sector, providing businesses with greater legal certainty and confidence to engage in digital trade. By promoting interoperable digital systems in areas such as paperless trade and e-invoicing, cross-border digital transactions are made easier and more efficient for business and consumers.
The ratification processes of the other EFTA States, namely Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland are ongoing. The ESDEA will enter into force for these EFTA States after the completion of their respective ratification processes.
