COP27: Impact on Singapore and South-east Asia
The 27th Conference of the Parties (“COP27”) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (“UNFCCC”) took place in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh from 6 to 20 November 2022 and concluded with the launch of the COP27 cover decision known as the Sharm el-Sheikh Implementation Plan.
Set against a difficult geopolitical backdrop with the Ukrainian war, energy crisis, inflationary pressures, and pandemic insecurity, COP27 resulted in countries delivering a package of decisions that reaffirmed their commitment to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The package also featured strengthened actions by countries to cut greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the unavoidable impacts of climate change, as well as increasing the support for finance, technology and capacity building for developing countries.
